Towards Upgrading or Polarization? Changes in the Swedish Occupational Structure from an International Perspective

Conference

For several years, there has been an intense discussion on the effect of technological change, in particular the impact of digitalization. Many scholars believe we are now in a period when new digital devices will reshape working life profoundly. Some are hopeful and state that jobs are generally being upgraded - new and better jobs are growing. Others see a more troublesome future with disappearance of jobs and a more polarized and unequal labour market - both good and bad job are on the rise.

This one-day conference focuses on the development in Sweden in the last decades. Which jobs tend to increase and which tend to decrease? Do we see more jobs with high salaries and good work environment? Or is it mainly low-status occupations that have expanded in the last decades? And how does the development of the Swedish labour market appear from an international perspective?

The conference speakers are:

Tomas Berglund, Professor of Sociology, University of Gothenburg. He leads a 6-year project on changes in the Swedish occupational structure, financed by Forte.

John Hurley, Research Manager at Eurofound. He has conducted several important studies of occupational change in European labour markets.

Michael Tåhlin, Professor of Sociology, Stockholm University. He recently published a much noticed report called The Myth of Polarization (Polariseringsmyten, Arena idé).

Ylva Ulfsdotter Eriksson, Associate Professor of Sociology, University of Gothenburg. She has made extensive research on professions and occupational prestige.

Erica Nordlander, PhD, University of Gothenburg. She has published several studies on social inequality and youth.

Jon Erik Dølvik, Senior Researcher, Fafo, Oslo. He leads the on-going Nordic project Future of Work: Opportunities and Challenges for the Nordic Models, financed by the Nordic Council of Ministers.

Linda Corin, PhD, Institute of Stress Medicine, Västra Götalandsregionen. She is an expert on work environments and a sustainable working life.

Lisa Björk, PhD, Institute of Stress Medicine, Västra Götalandsregionen. Her expertise is in the area of work environments and gender.
